With Spring Concerts Coming Up, Students Hope Prices Stay Down

February 4, 2010 by Jaron Kanfer

Columbus will soon play host to a few of the nation’s top acts. Upcoming events include the Alkaline Trio hitting Newport Music Hall Mar. 3 and John Mayer at Nationwide Arena on the Mar. 12. In addition, both Mariah Carrey and the Black Eyed Peas will stop at Value City Arena in February: Carrey on Feb. 10 and the Peas the Feb. 16.
Columbus State student Brooke Rosen, 22, is thrilled about the upcoming concerts, but voices a common concern. “I’m really excited for Mariah Carrey, I just hope ticket prices aren’t too expensive,” said Rosen.
Rosen, like many other students, will attempt to attend spring events, but still do so on a balanced budget.
Ohio State student Brett Johnson, 21, explained a different strategy for attending shows on a budget. “I stay away from the big arena concerts,” remarked Johnson. “Smaller venues like Newport and the clubs are better to me because it’s a more private show for less money.”
More intimate venues such as Newport Music Hall, located near the Ohio State campuslocated near the Arena District, and the Basement, located near the Arena District, both keep prices low to accommodate students while filling the house for their acts.
Jacob Politsky, 22, a member of the Newport staff, explained ticket pricing, stating, “We always try to keep tickets prices as low as possible to attract students. [College students] make up over 90 percent of our business so we need to make it as cheap as possible.”
