Phi Theta Kappa Doing Good Things

March 9, 2009 by David Monica

The Columbus State chapter of Phi Theta Kappa had a fundraising bake sale on Feb. 13 in the Nestor Hall of Main Campus. The bake was a wonderful success, and proceeds go to fund the annual trip to Dallas for the International Phi Theta Kappa Convention.

Phi Theta Kappa is a national honor society for students who are interested in bettering their community from both a local and global standpoint.

The local chapter, known as Alpha Rho Epsilon, is easy to join. Chapter president Amber Davidson, who is the head of more than 850 Columbus State members and 15 officers, is proud of what Alpha Rho Epsilon has accomplished.

“We are a non-profit organization that deals with issues such as the environment, community organization, and fundraising,” Davidson said. “It costs $65 to join, and the student must have a 3.5 GPA or higher.”

One of the projects that the Phi Theta Kappa organization is currently working on is Operation Green, which is a way to create funding for the betterment of the environment on a national scale.

One does not need to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa to participate in their activities. They frequently have fun and easy events for all Columbus State students to attend.

“We are going to be having a Spaghetti Western movie day, an idea that adds to the Halloween movie day they have had previously,” Davidson said. “All a student has to do is bring one or two canned goods to donate to our funds to participate in the film viewing.” This is an event that is open to all students.

Phi Theta Kappa’s main office is located in Nestor Hall, but they also have an office in the TL building on Main Campus. To contact them to inquire about membership or to participate in any of their activities you can call them at their office at 614-287-5608. Their office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
