Twitter vs. Facebook

February 9, 2010 by Kendra Poling

Social networking sites have become more popular in the past few years.  Facebook and Twitter are gaining new users daily and thus raising the question: which one is better? Students at Columbus State Community College seem to favor Facebook for their lifestyle and Twitter for fun.

According to Jason Cadden, a student at Columbus State, he prefers using Facebook in order to keep in touch with friends and to plan events. He does have a Twitter account which he has used a couple of times.

“I use Facebook so that I can keep in touch with my friends,” Cadden said. “Facebook is also good for organizing activities with friends.”

Another student at Columbus State, Jenna Joy, says she has an account with Facebook but does not know enough about Twitter to sign up for an account.

“I use Facebook because it is an easy way to communicate and find lost friends,” Joy said. “I do not have a Twitter because I do not know much about it at all."

Joy also talked about the possibility of Twitter to become more widespread than Facebook one day.

“Yeah, it probably will because people always want the newest thing,” she said.

Andrew Neilson is also a student at Columbus State and he spoke of how he had an account for both but used each for different purposes.

“Facebook is to connect with friends and Twitter is to follow people I am interested in for whatever reason,” Neilson said.

He talked how he though Twitter would not become more widespread than Facebook because it is less personal.

“No, because it gives less personal information,” Neilson said.

The Department of Multimedia Studies at Columbus State was contacted but was unable for comment about social networking sites.

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and launched in August 2005 and to date has over 400 million users.

Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey in 2006, it now has about 26 million users and is growing at a staggering rate.
